In August 2006 the South London Gallery presented The Mothership Collective, a project devised by artist Harold Offeh, who invited fellow artists, dancers and musicians to create an installation and performances with the public inspired by art, science fiction and afro-futurism.

"From the Mothership comes the Mamasan of the Milky Way, Ming Wong. His Intergalactic Speed Dating includes a crash course on effective intergalactic communications - with tips on how to pull an alien - followed by an intergalactic speed dating session with afro-futuristic tunes"

The 30 brave members of the public who showed up were transformed into their alien alter egos, then had three minute interviews with each of the other aliens to explore how love was expressed from where they came from:

SOME USEFUL TIPS

Don’t talk about the weather!  You only get 3 minutes with each alien.

Instead, Mamasan advises you to focus on the following points:

  • Does LOVE exist where you come from?
  • How is LOVE expressed where you come from? (How can I tell if somebody loves me?  How do I show that I love somebody?)
  • What are the physical attributes of attraction where you come from? (What turns you on?)
  • What are the mating rituals where you come from? (What are you into?)
