Nation, Narration, Narcosis – Collecting Entanglements and  Embodied Histories at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin
Ming is showing Life of Imitation at the Hamburger Bahnhof in the exhibition Nation, Narration, Narcosis: Collecting Entanglements and Embodied Histories, curated by Anna Catarina Gebbers. Based on Beuys’s concept of social sculpture, the exhibition reflects on the significance of “nation” in the name “National Gallery”, along with other concepts of connectedness, solidarity and individuality.
Life of Imitation (2009) is a two channel video installation that reworks a classic Hollywood melodrama scene from Imitation of Life (directed by Douglas Sirk, 1959) between a black mother and her mixed-race daughter who has been ‘passing’ for white. The roles are played by male actors from the 3 main ethnic groups in Singapore (Chinese, Malay and Indian), switching roles in every shot.
Ming created this work for the Singapore pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009 where he was awarded a Special Mention; it is shown in the room of Joseph Beuys’ work Straßenbahnhaltestelle (A Monument to the Future), which Beuys created for the German pavilion at the 37th Venice Biennale in 1976.
